Disdain Sculpture

date. 2023

medium. Sculpture; mat board, carboard, paint, CD, clay, and wire

size. 24 x 10 in

After creating Newsworthy Phase 4, I had to come up with a word representing my overall news article on attacking Trans rights, specifically in the chess community, so I used the word "disdain." I wanted to emulate the feeling that disdain gives others, especially towards marginalized people, so I added a wire cage, someone alone, a broken CD, clay eyes, and a clay hand. These things each can resemble the feeling disdain gives you. I also added a chess board to tie it back to my newsworthy article. The definition of disdain is, "the feeling that someone or something is unworthy of one's consideration or respect; contempt." When asked to install the piece of my choosing I chose a dark shaded corner. This is where people walk by and neglect the corner behind the printer. This not only relates to the word but also the neglect the Trans community unfortunately faces.
